This year, the Automechanika Shanghai celebrates a significant milestone: its 20th anniversary. With 6,763 exhibitors from 40 countries and an exhibition space of 350,000 square meters spread across 14 halls at the National Exhibition and Convention Center in Shanghai, the event sets a new benchmark.
On the way to the opening ceremony
We had the privilege to attend the opening ceremony and subsequent press conference, capturing the unique atmosphere and key messages of this record-breaking event.
From Humble Beginnings to a Global Platform
When the Automechanika Shanghai debuted in 2004, it primarily aimed to connect Chinese businesses with international markets. Starting with 235 exhibitors, its potential was evident early on.
Automechanika Opening Ceremony
Stephan Buurma, Member of the Board of Management of Messe Frankfurt Group, recalled during the opening speech: “We launched this show during the rapid rise of China’s automotive production and sales. Today, it stands as one of the most important platforms for innovation and international collaboration in the automotive industry.”
A Showcase of Growth and Innovation
China's evolution into a leading global automotive market is reflected in the Automechanika’s growth. In 2024, over 6,700 exhibitors are showcasing their latest products and technologies—20% more than the previous year. A significant focus is placed on New Energy and Connectivity, with one-third of exhibitors dedicated to these transformative sectors.
Innovation4Mobility
In Hall 5.1 alone, 470 exhibitors occupy 26,000 square meters, presenting cutting-edge solutions for tomorrow’s mobility. Companies like CALB, Rsemi, and Shedrive unveiled innovative products in battery technology, electric drivetrains, and smart systems. Fiona Chiew, General Manager of Messe Frankfurt (HK) Ltd, emphasized: “This exhibition not only highlights China’s progress in sustainable mobility but also provides an international platform to share technologies and visions with a global audience.”
Sustainability as a Driving Force
The Automechanika Shanghai also underscores ecological responsibility. The organizers have adopted a comprehensive sustainability strategy, including modular and recyclable exhibition designs and a greater reliance on digital information over printed materials.
“Sustainability is not just a trend; it is a necessity,” said Stephan Buurma. “We aim to present forward-looking technologies while demonstrating how events can be made more environmentally friendly.”
A Global Stage for the Automotive Industry
The event’s role as a global hub is evident through its 17 national and regional pavilions, including a prominent German pavilion featuring companies like SEG Automotive Germany, MAHA, and BASF. SEG Automotive showcased a high-voltage electric drive system, addressing rising efficiency and performance demands in electromobility.
CALB presenting their portfolio
Additionally, 215 international buyer groups—the highest in the exhibition’s history—participated, with delegations from over 50 countries, including newcomers like Albania, Kazakhstan, and Jordan. “This event bridges local and international markets,” added Fiona Chiew. “It actively contributes to the globalization of the automotive industry.”
Education and Networking as Cornerstones
Education and exchange remain central to the Automechanika Shanghai. With 81 events, the exhibition fosters knowledge sharing and skill development. The Global New Energy Vehicle Technology Innovation Summit highlighted sustainable mobility innovations, while the International Automobile Industry Talent Development Conference focused on nurturing future industry leaders.
Reflecting the Industry’s Future
The Automechanika Shanghai is more than an exhibition—it is a mirror reflecting the transformation and challenges faced by the automotive industry today. It seamlessly blends tradition with innovation, local expertise with global networking.
While its primary focus remains on the aftermarket sector, supporting the unsung heroes of the industry, we noticed a gap in representation for EV infrastructure and software—areas more prominent at other trade shows.
This focus is understandable, given the Automechanika’s commitment to showcasing the systems and solutions that keep the automotive world running.
